Holter Monitor
A Holter monitor is a small, portable device that continuously records the heart’s rhythm and electrical activity over an extended period. It is used to detect irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias) that may not appear during a standard Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG).
Why is a Holter Monitor Used?
A doctor may recommend a Holter monitor if:
- You experience irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias).
- You have unexplained fainting or dizziness.
- You have a heart condition that increases the risk of arrhythmias.
How it Works
The device is worn continuously for 24 to 48 hours or longer, recording heart activity during daily activities, sleep, and exercise. If irregular heartbeats occur less frequently, a longer-term event recorder may be used instead.
Advantages of Holter Monitoring
- Provides continuous heart rhythm data beyond a short ECG test.
- Helps diagnose intermittent heart irregularities that may be missed in a clinic.
- Non-invasive and painless, allowing normal daily activities.
A Holter monitor plays a crucial role in diagnosing hidden heart conditions and guiding treatment decisions for better heart health.
